Which fairs or exhibitions in China are suitable for my business?
Before you decide on which fair or exhibitions in China you wish to visit or participate in, it is important to specify your target that you wish to reach. We can distinguish different types of exhibitions or fairs, which reach different, target groups:
- Exhibitions for the general public: exhibitions that are open to the general public variation from customers to agents or importers.
- Trade fairs for a specific public: trade fairs where one type of products is central
- Horizontal trade fairs: one technique or product type is central and visitors come from the same business sector
- Vertical trade fairs: range of buyers is central, different target groups in the same business sector
- International exhibitions: held in combination with a particular international event.
Since you are dealing with a total different country and are not familiar with organizers...it is better to gather some information on trade fairs or exhibitions in your line of industry, the size of the fair or exhibitor: statistics on their estimated annual exhibitors and visitors, also the origin of the exhibitors and the line of business from the visitors. Otherwise, the name of an exhibition or trade fair in China might deceive you in the way that the international exhibition might not be international at all.

What are the advantages of participating in a fair in China?
An advantage of participating to a fair in China is that it is an ideal way of networking with visitors (customers, companies) who are already interested in your product or service and originate from your line of business or industry. It is an ideal way for you to get in touch with your future Chinese business partner, whether it is a customer, a buyer, importer or agent. Also it makes it possible for you to take notice of your foreign and domestic competitors. If you are taking part as an exhibitor it is the ideal way for you to present your product information and make publicity for your product.
What are the points of attention to participate in a fair or exhibition in China?
- Apart from the cost calculation, the thorough organization needed to participate in a trade fair or exhibition in China as a Dutch visitor or exhibitor, dealing with different customs, import regulations, custom clearance. A very large point of attention is taking into account the customs and habits of China in ways of presenting yourself and your company. Therefore a thorough preparation in terms of name cards, Chinese translation, Chinese brochures, etc is necessary.
Follow-up
It is rare for contracts to be signed at the trade fair itself: contacts are made first and then followed up. Make sure that you have a proper administrative system at the trade fair to record the people who are interested and who give you their business cards. You need to 'keep them warm'. If you do not do any follow-up, much of the money you have invested in the stand will be wasted.
